What is the role of a health care agent in a psychiatric advance directive?

In one type of psychiatric advance directive, you can identify a health care agent who is empowered to make decisions about your mental health care if you become incapable. A health care agent must follow the instructions in the psychiatric advance directive and act in accordance with your wishes. The health care agent can make a range of decisions including discussion about treatments, communicating with or changing a health care provider, admission to a treatment facility, and use of medications and other treatments including electroconvulsive therapy.
