What are some strategies for reducing the adverse effects of antipsychotic medications for people with SMI?

Antipsychotic medications can be an important tool in helping you in your path towards recovery from psychotic illnesses. However, these medications can also have important side effects including restlessness, abnormal movements, weight gain, and increased blood sugar. You should make sure to let your doctor know if you are having any of these symptoms, and ask whether there are options to reduce your dose, switch medications, or treat those side effects with medications. An increasing number of recovery and/or drop-in centers have support groups for people experiencing distressing side effects from medication.
