How should I screen for and address suicide risk in populations with serious mental illnesses?

People with serious mental illnesses are at elevated risk for suicidal thoughts and actions. Having an alcohol or substance use disorder can be a particularly important risk for acting on suicidal impulses. If you are having thoughts about suicide, it is urgent for you to discuss with your mental health provider. You can also reach out to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988.
