The supported employment approach seems to be an effective way to help individuals with serious mental illness get a job and earn money. However, even with the help of supported employment some individuals might not be ready for the demands of a job. Could getting a volunteer job be a good way for such individuals to get started?

Starting with a volunteer job would be an excellent way for you or your relative who is experiencing challenges with day-to-day functioning, to get back into the workforce. Volunteering offers one the opportunity to become accustomed to following a work schedule, completing assigned tasks, and interacting with others in the workplace. A volunteer work environment should be less demanding than paid employment and perhaps less stressful.
