The supported employment approach seems to be an effective way to help individuals with serious mental illness get a job and earn money. However, even with the help of supported employment some individuals might not be ready for the demands of a job. Could getting a volunteer job be a good way for such individuals to get started?

Starting with a volunteer job would be an excellent way for individuals with SMI who are struggling with daily functioning to get back into the workforce. Volunteering offers the individual the opportunity to become accustomed to following a work schedule, completing assigned tasks, and interacting with others in the workplace. A volunteer work environment should be less demanding than paid employment and perhaps less stressful. View more information on training to become a supported employment specialist.
