Can I use OpenNotes (sharing of clinical notes with patients) with my SMI patients?

Yes! For full details, please view this free webinar from SMI Adviser: Sharing Clinical Notes with Patients: Benefits, Risks, and Challenges (January 2020). The Veterans Administration (VA) has been offering all patients access to their notes for many years and no adverse events have been reported. Studies of sharing notes with mental health patients have also been published, and again no adverse events have been reported. Rather, some patients find having access to their notes helps them to remember their treatment plan, ask the right questions at following visits, and form a stronger alliance with their clinician. Because any patient can request their notes through medical records, offering OpenNotes does not grant patients special access to their records, but rather creates an easier pathway that has the potential to support better care outcomes.
