How much exercise should people with SMI get per week?

Because people with serious mental illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression are at higher risk of dying earlier because of higher rates of heart disease among other factors – it is important to reduce that risk with exercise. While there is no one right amount of exercise for all people – for most, thirty minutes of exercise of moderate intensity, such as brisk walking for three days a week should be a minimum goal. Some people may find a step counter, also known pedometer, a useful tool to help them keep track of exercise.
