The use of opioid pain medication has increased dramatically in the United States over the past two decades. That is associated with an increased risk of complications including opioid use disorder, fatal drug poisoning due to accidental overdoses or suicides in addition to a myriad of other psychological and otherwise medical conditions. Buprenorphine is commonly used for the treatment of opioid use disorder and has also been found to be effective at treating pain.
