What is the nature of the relationship between a peer support specialist and the people they serve?

The relationship between a peer support specialist and the person they provide support to is based on both having experienced similar mental health and/or substance use disorders and the life disruption that frequently occurs with these conditions. It is a relationship of trust and equality based on empathy, honesty, and the desire to help and be helped in the journey to recovery. For additional information on peer support, please visit the Mental Health America Center for Peer Support.
