What are the pros and cons of taking a long acting injectable antipsychotic medication?

Benefits of use of long acting injectable (LAI) antipsychotics: Increased medication adherence and having a very steady level of the drug in the blood balanced with a decreased need to remember to take daily pills; clinic visit or nursing visit for injection allows for a consistent relationship and monitoring by clinicians. Disadvantages of use of LAI antipsychotics: Many LAIs may take more time for medication to start working; potential for pain at injection site; side effects may take longer to go away (although most prescriptions for LAIs require that patients trial oral versions of the same/similar medication in order to establish tolerability to be sure that they won’t encounter side effects from the LAI, sometimes also to establish that the medication with be effective in treating symptoms); clinic visit or nursing visit required for injection; historical perception of stigma may be associated with LAI antipsychotic medications, however, LAI formulations are being utilized to manage physical health conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis, which may begin to lessen such stigma.
