Is weight gain a problem with clozapine, and what can be done?

Significant weight gain can occur in individuals who take clozapine, similar to some other antipsychotic medications. A 5- to 10-pound weight gain should lead to intervention. Fortunately, a large proportion of individuals who take clozapine improve, which can allow greater engagement with weight loss interventions. It is easier to prevent weight gain than to lose weight. Monitoring of weight is important. Individuals taking clozapine should weigh themselves weekly. Interventions often focus on diet and activity. These can be in-person, internet-based, or include meal delivery. If there is weight gain, talk with your clinician or provider about options.
