How can a patient know if a therapist is trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?

There is no national standard for certification of competence in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Patients and families can find this frustrating. The Beck Institute is developing a certification for release in 2019, but it is not clear how this will impact the field. Expertise with CBT is important for many issues like anxiety and depression, and new literature indicates in its applicability in treatment of psychosis. Be clear with people if this is a skill set you have and what your practice history is with this technique. CBT is not for every patient, every problem or every practitioner. If you are not trained in this modality, be transparent so that the person seeking CBT can locate the appropriate intervention.
