Employment of People with Serious Mental Illness

People with serious mental illness are often unemployed. Competitive employment is frequently a goal of individuals, is economically beneficial for individuals and society, and usually has a positive effect on psychiatric illness. Supported employment is a structured, team-based approach to job development, job placement, and work supports. The goal of supported employment services is competitive employment in the community. There are evidence-based approaches to implementing and providing supported employment services. Guidelines state that people with serious mental illness should have the opportunity to receive supported employment services.
