Do peer support specialists encourage the people they serve in taking medications?

A peer support specialist does not take an active role in encouraging or discouraging the use of medications as a part of an individual’s treatment. The can play a very powerful role in assisting people to self-manage and become active partners with their providers and family members, if so desired. Peer support providers can also greatly assisting individuals and families in finding reliable information about types of medications, and their possible benefits and side effects.
