What should I think about if a patient with schizophrenia is not improving?

SMI Adviser includes substantial resources on management of patients with schizophrenia. In patients with schizophrenia, it is advisable to consider whether the patient is receiving treatment that includes all appropriate domains. For more information on these, it is helpful to refer to treatment guidelines, including the American Psychiatric Association Practice Guideline for the Treatment of Patients with Schizophrenia, Third Edition (2020). For example, treatment sometimes does not make full use, when indicated, of assertive community treatment, family involvement, and appropriate medication. If a patient has treatment-refractory schizophrenia, medication includes consideration of clozapine. You can find resources to help with use of clozapine at the SMI Adviser Clozapine Center of Excellence.
