What is the nature of the relationship between a peer support specialist and the people they serve?

Peer support services are delivered by individuals who have been diagnosed with similar conditions and have life experiences in common with the people they serve. People with mental health and/or substance use disorders have a unique capacity to help each other based on a feeling of trust engendered by a sense of equality between two or more people who have shared the experience of living with one or more of these conditions.
