This resource focuses on the current state of the opioid crisis, including deaths from prescription and illicit opioids, prescribing trends, and steps being taken to address the current epidemic. The role of the FDA and state Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs is discussed to increase clinicians understanding of the Federal response and the significant of monitoring programs. Recent publications on appropriate prescribing practices are reviewed. Future actions, as recommended by several expert panels, are presented that discuss the importance of using medication-assisted treatment, practicing responsible prescribing practices and covering safe disposal of unused medication, in order to decrease the risk of diversion and misuse.
