What are the common challenges encountered by people who have schizophrenia as they age?

It is known that people with schizophrenia and other serious mental illnesses (SMI) have higher rates of many chronic physical illnesses than the rest of the population. The combination of these conditions often leads to early mortality. People with serious mental illness (4-6% of the U.S. population) have a life expectancy that is 11-30 years shorter than that of the general population.
