Are there any symptom severity restrictions or level of recovery requirements for individuals with SMI to be able to participate in cognitive remediation training programs?

There are no specific symptom severity restrictions or level of recovery requirements for individuals with SMI to participate in cognitive remediation training programs. In fact, cognitive remediation has been conducted in inpatient settings with individuals who have delusions or are experiencing hallucinations. Actually, cognitive remediation can provide a healthy distraction from a person’s symptoms because the participant is required to focus on the cognitive tasks. However, in order to participate meaningfully, an individual would need to be cooperative with the training staff and be able to sit at the computer during the training sessions.
